The Octagon, Roosevelt Island
888 Main Street is located on Roosevelt Island and consists of two very large towers connected to an octagonal rotunda. The octagon, which opened in 1841, was originally designed by Alexander Jackson Davis, an influential architect at the time. The builders made use of the blue-gray stone found on Roosevelt Island. After the building closed in 1955, two wings of the building were demolished and a fire destroyed part of the octagonal rotunda. In 1972, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places and later restored.
Epstein Engineering received an award by ownership of 888 Main Street, after a consultant selection process by the owner, to perform the 7th Cycle Local Law 11 façade inspections for the buildings just prior to the Department of Buildings deadline. The firm worked expeditiously to inspect and process all data obtained as this date approached. Epstein Engineering was also able to retain and coordinate a scaffolding contractor to complete the close-up inspection in a timely manner. The firm worked tirelessly to complete the visual inspection, the scaffold inspection, the detailed written report, and the subsequent filing of the Local Law 11 report prior to the city imposed deadline with no adverse impact to the client.
